Our Open Bookcase: Three Years Later
Three years ago, we set up a little book exchange cabinet right in front of our home. Back then, I already blogged about it. Our little cabinet was only able to withstand the weather of the first winter to a limited extent, so we had to rebuild it. I also wrote about that. Now another two years have passed, and I don’t want to miss the opportunity to give another update on our little book exchange cabinet.
For the body of our cabinet, we had used an old kitchen cupboard back then. We built a roof on top of it and painted everything nicely. However, chipboard is not made for outdoor use, and even with paint, moisture seeped into the wood during the first winter. At that time, we added small feet underneath the cabinet, since the wood had soaked up water from the ground, and the books in the lower corners had become moldy. Even with these improvements, after three years, it had reached the end of its life. The screws of the hinges, which we had replaced, tore out of the rotten wood, and indeed, the doors were the Achilles’ heel, since they are opened and closed countless times. We had already added a rubber seal between the doors, but even there the cabinet had become leaky, and especially on rainy days you could tell that the books were a bit damp when taking them out.
Since our book exchange cabinet is very popular, with people stopping by all the time and lots of books being exchanged, we didn’t want to simply dismantle it without replacement. We considered building it completely anew from solid wood, but that isn’t exactly cheap once you add up the material costs. On the other hand, we didn’t want another temporary fix, because that would just mean more work again soon, and the investment would only stretch out over several years.
Then my better half played her trump card and asked her dad for help. And it’s worth mentioning that he really knows his stuff and probably has the best set of tools in his basement any DIY enthusiast could dream of—and he knows how to use them, too. In short: a book cabinet built by my father-in-law could probably survive several natural disasters. In no time at all, he built us a new cabinet using weatherproof wooden panels that are usually used for car trailers. My wife’s brother also contributed some heavy-duty hinges that allow the doors to open wide. Once the weather finally became a bit warmer and sunnier, we painted the cabinet, and now it shines in its old new glory.
When Storm Sabine was announced, we were worried that the cabinet might topple over, since it’s a bit taller than the old one. But once again, we got the father-in-law service: he bolted the cabinet onto the trash shed, so now it can’t tip or fall over. That’s a premium solution, you have to admit.

As mentioned earlier, our book exchange cabinet is very popular and frequently visited. The books inside change constantly. Occasionally, I remove the ones that don’t move, but overall the turnover is quite high—especially before and after vacation periods. In these three years, we haven’t experienced any vandalism or anything like that, and everyone seems to treat the cabinet with care. I also don’t get the impression that anyone takes books to resell them, as I’ve heard from other cabinet owners. The quality of the books is quite good. I rarely take any for myself, but every now and then there’s something interesting.
I’m very happy about our new book exchange cabinet—many thanks again to our dear father-in-law for this wonderful and magnificent cabinet, which will surely last a very long time. Da meine Rezensionskinderbücher und Jugendbücher ins Kinderhospiz gehen oder zu der Kinder- und Jugendkrebsstation gebe ich oft Romane und Sachbücher in die Bücherschränke in Gießen. Und ab und zu ist da auch ein Buch drin, welches ich schon lange lesen wollte …. Ich finde es eine tolle Sache und nutze es gerne.
Das sieht mega gut aus!! Wünschte mir, dass es dies auch bei uns in der Nähe geben würde. Wirklich mega cool :)

Ich spiele schon seit einiger Zeit mit dem Gedanken, hier in unserer Gemeinde einen Büchertausch-Schrank zu etablieren. Bisher waren meine Gedanken und Ideen noch sehr unausgegoren…! Darum: Vielen Dank für die Anregung!

Das sieht richtig toll aus! Habt ihr den auf eurem Grundstückszaun platziert? Ich spiele nämlich auch mit dem Gedanken so etwas zu platzieren, aber es gibt ja bestimmt irgendwelche rechtlichen Vorgaben, dass es nicht auf dem öffentlichen Gehweg etc. stehen darf…

was für ein wunderschöner Bücherschrank! Er war vorher schon schön, aber jetzt freue ich mich mit dir, dass er auch witterungsbeständig ist und allen lange eine Freude bereiten wird!
In Bonn gibt es einige Bücherschränke von der Stadt. Immer, wenn ich an einem vorbeikomme, schaue ich auch rein, aber ich kann mich auch nicht daran erinnern, mal etwas mitgenommen zu haben. Reinstellen tue ich regelmäßig Romane, häufig auch noch ganz aktuelle, die mich nicht begeistern konnten und die auch im Freundes- und Familienkreis niemand lesen möchte. Die sind dann natürlich in so einem Bücherschrank schnell weg.

ich finde das richtig klasse.
Ich lese ja schon ziemlich lange mit und fand es sehr spannend die Entwicklung mitzuverfolgen. Einfach eine tolle Sache, das würde ich auch sehr gerne machen, wenn wir ein eigenes Grundstück hätten. Leider hier so mitten in der Großstadt ist das nicht möglich, aber ich werde mir mal die Liste anschauen, wo es hier vielleicht bei uns auch so etwas gibt. Den einzigen Bücherttauschschrank, den ich mal gesehen habe war in Büsum. Das war glaube ich eine Telefonzelle, wenn ich mich nicht täusche. Fand ich auch klasse.

Der Büchertisch in unserem Vorort von Wiesbaden wurde wegen Vandalismus nach wenigen Monaten wieder entfernt. Das Bücheregal in der Kirche wurde wegen Desinteresse der Besucher wieder abgebaut. Ob das am Angebot oder dem fehlenden Interesse der Besucher lag, ist mir nicht bekannt.

selber einen betreiben geht bei uns leider nicht, auch wenn ich das gerne tun würde. Aber wir sind am Ende eines Privatweges – außer der Postbotin kommt hier schlicht niemand hin. Und der Parkplatz an der Straße ist nur gemietet. (Außerdem würde mein Vater vermutlich die Krise kriegen, wenn Menschen seinem Auto zu nahe kämen. Er sieht das zwar nur als Gebrauchsgegenstand und ist keiner von denen, die ihre Karre ständig polieren, aber Bücher mag er leider noch weniger. Von Menschen ganz zu schweigen.)
Und jetzt, in Coronazeiten, kann ich leider nicht einmal zu meinem Stamm-Schrank. Der hängt leider bei uns im Rathaus, das jetzt schon seit fast vier Wochen dauergeschlossen hat. Normalerweise mag ich Bücherregale aber sehr gern und nutz sie häufig. Selbst meine Masterarbeit habe ich über sie geschrieben. (Sie bieten nämlich einen sehr guten Ort für Feldforschung im Sozialverhalten.) So langsam vermisse ich auch die Möglichkeit, einfach mal wieder nach neuen Büchern zu schauen. Nicht, weil mir der Lesestoff ausgeht. Einfach das Schmökern im Schrank selbst tut der Psyche gut. Da beneide ich dich sehr, dass du das jederzeit machen kannst.

Hey,
da habt Ihr ja jetzt ein richtiges “Schatzkästchen” (und das im zweifachen Sinn..)! :)
Ich habe auch schon mal überlegt, dass so ein Schränkchen an unserer Grundstücksgrenze eigentlich ganz cool wäre, aber dann fahre ich doch wieder zu dem Bücherschrank bei uns am Markt, der meistens gut aufgeräumt ist, aber in dem auch viel “Mist” gelagert wird. Dennoch habe ich da das eine oder andere Mal schon gute Bücher für mich gefunden.
Wenn ich Bücher aussortiere, gebe ich sie erst meiner Mama, die sie dann bei Nichtinteresse (von ihr oder sogar meinem Opa) die Bücher in den Bücherschrank bringt oder bei Fairkauf abgibt.
Bücherschränke sind wirklich sehr sinnvoll und praktisch! Macht weiter so.
