For example, there\u2019s the MIT License as a piano song<\/a>. For my first test, I created a house track about how annoying it is to take out the trash (here\u2019s the result<\/a>). Then I had it generated again as an aria, and Suno actually created it as an Italian-sung aria, which you can listen to here<\/a>. It\u2019s quite impressive what\u2019s produced in just a few seconds.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Of course, the AI was trained on all sorts of songs from the past decades, which has drawn the attention of record labels \u2014 they now want a piece of the pie and have sued Suno<\/a>. I\u2019m not a musician myself, so Suno isn\u2019t a tool for me to create art, but as someone who enjoys good music, it\u2019s a wonderful opportunity to create the kind of music I\u2019ve always wanted to hear. I find it fascinating how music styles can be blended, and when you add a certain style to the prompt, you can actually hear it in the song.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n There\u2019s one record I\u2019ve listened to a thousand times because the music is simply so good: Saudade<\/em> by Thievery Corporation. I love the gentle music, the calm vocals, the mix of downtempo, bossa nova, French pop, guitar, and the sense of longing and melancholy. There\u2019s hardly anything else quite like it, and even Thievery Corporation\u2019s other albums have a completely different, though equally wonderful, style. Suno offers a great opportunity to generate music in this vein \u2014 something I\u2019ve explored quite extensively.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n And indeed: I find the generated songs really well done. Of course, the quality doesn\u2019t come close to that of real artists \u2014 that must be said clearly. The sound quality of Suno songs is still far from sufficient. For example, for a classical piece or a proper pop song, the sound is still too muddy and low-quality. But for the Saudade\u2013Bossa-Nova\u2013Downtempo\u2013Thievery-Corporation sound, this LoFi quality actually fits perfectly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Of course, I wondered what these songs would sound like on vinyl, because that\u2019s really the only \u2014 and the perfect \u2014 medium for this kind of music and this rough LoFi quality. If you search online, you\u2019ll find several providers offering one-off vinyl pressings. It\u2019s not exactly cheap \u2014 prices easily go up to 120 euros or more. I found Tonstudio Lorenz on Etsy<\/a>, which creates an LP for 59 euros and even includes a cover sleeve. The reviews were good, and the price seemed fair to me \u2014 the Suno songs are just pleasant to listen to. So I selected the best tracks, and after only a week, I already had my record in hand. To make it a true AI project, I also created the cover using a AI-generated image<\/a> (with Bing Image Creator<\/a>). The images weren\u2019t large enough for print, so (unsurprisingly) I used an AI upscaler to enlarge them. The program is called Upscayl<\/a> \u2014 it\u2019s free and does a great job scaling even small images. I wasn\u2019t particularly creative with the title, I admit \u2014 but so what.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n I\u2019m absolutely thrilled with the result. Yes, the LoFi quality is of course fully present on the record too, but what\u2019s added is the warmth, the crackling, and the nostalgia that only vinyl can deliver. It\u2019s genuinely enjoyable to listen to \u2014 beautiful, atmospheric music, and the record\u2019s pressing quality is excellent. That was real handmade music \u2014 everything was better back then\u2026\u201d Or often you\u2019ll hear: \u201cThat\u2019s just a new rehash of what already exists. AI is actually dumb; it just stitches together probabilities of existing stuff.\u201d There may be some truth to that, but let\u2019s be honest \u2014 95% of the music that floats through the airwaves and is forgotten within a few months could easily be created by AI, since much of it is just another remix of the same old formula. Perhaps not entirely new, but still, a unique and rarely heard musical mix is absolutely possible. I\u2019m very curious to see how this will all develop in the coming years. As recently as May, Suno raised 125 million U.S. dollars in investor funding<\/a>, so you can be sure the development will continue at a rapid pace.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n For me personally, this is just another new source of music, and if it matches my taste, it goes on the playlist. I\u2019m fascinated that it\u2019s even possible to have your own record made with AI-generated music \u2014 fully customized to your preferences.
