All four of these things can be found in the finest quality at Mare Verlag, which I’ve mentioned many times here and on Twitter. This year, Mare’s fall catalog is once again filled with exquisite literature that I absolutely must own and read, so I decided to start a small series about these wonderful books. Mare Verlag has never disappointed me so far, and there are definitely a few hidden gems among them. I’m particularly fond of two of Mare’s series, both of which always deliver something truly remarkable.

Classics

The first category is the Mare Classics, always presented in elegant slipcases that make any bibliophile’s heart beat faster. My goal is to collect them all, and I’m getting close — only a few are still missing. I’ve already reviewed some of them here, and several more reviews will follow soon. What makes these classics special is not just their appearance, but also their unusual themes. Newly translated, highly authentic journals (Dangerous Work: Diary of an Arctic Adventure), distinctive stories with their own atmosphere (The Garden Above the Sea), or a unique blend of love and nature (The Green Ray by Jules Verne) make these books a true pleasure to read. The sea doesn’t always take center stage — it’s simply there, shaping the story and mood in its own subtle way.

Further down, you’ll find a small preview of the books I’ll be reviewing here soon. I’ve already read and reviewed the first two. I’m very curious about the other three, which all sound promising. By the Open Sea by August Strindberg is about life on the skerries — a topic I’ve read about before, and the atmosphere and rustic idyll of that region have always fascinated me. I love the nature and landscapes of the Scandinavian countries, with their unique and incomparable moods. A Life by Guy de Maupassant tells the fate of a woman in the 19th century — after Emma, Effi, and Anna, an absolute must-read for me. From Sea to Sea contains travel letters and reports from Rudyard Kipling’s journeys through India, the Far East, and America. I expect it to be similar to Doyle’s Arctic diary — I love such authentic first-hand accounts.

Photo Books

As someone who is passionate about photography, the photo books from Mare hold a very special fascination for me. They’re not just collections of striking images; each tells its own story. You have to be open to the experience — these books don’t simply present one polished photo after another. There’s certainly a level of photographic mastery here, but the images feel real, full of the atmosphere of the places they capture. The sea, of course, is a constant companion — showing how it captivates, transforms, and influences not just nature but people as well. I’ve already featured one such photo book here: Iceland by Heike Ollertz and Edgar Herbst. Antarctic Wilderness: South Georgia by Thies Matzen and Kicki Ericson is quite similar, filled with stunning photographs while also offering insight into the adventure the photographers embarked on.

I’m especially looking forward to two new photo books: Salt of the Earth and Scotland. Salt of the Earth in particular sounds fascinating — the theme alone makes me wonder what kind of images await inside. Scotland is still on my list of travel destinations, and judging by the cover, it seems to feature photographs taken far from the usual tourist spots.

I’m really looking forward to the reading ahead over the coming months (some of these books won’t be published for a while).
