And whenever we go on vacation or take trips to new places, I automatically keep an eye out for charming little bookshops. For browsing and looking around, but also for taking photos—especially when it’s a beautiful antiquarian bookshop like the one I discovered in Husum.

I’ll be honest, I’m probably a bit of an odd one out here: I don’t really like old books. Okay, really old ones are beautiful, of course—everyone loves those. But I definitely prefer new prints: crisp white pages, clean, finely bound, with a clear typeface. Neat and tidy, which is probably because I’m a software developer (if you don’t keep your software tidy, it tends to blow up in your face rather quickly). But still, I really enjoy browsing in antiquarian bookshops and always get a kick out of finding a classic I’ve already read—and seeing that it had exactly the same text many years ago.

The following picture shows the view from the entrance into the shop. I love shelves like these, and I think it’s a pity there isn’t a bookstore organized exactly like this—but with new books on the shelves (which, of course, should still be classics).

In addition to books, there were also some decorative items and even a few new books. And it was quite lively in that little shop. People really seem to love such charming places. It’s a shame that small bookstores are being replaced by online shopping and that these cozy havens are slowly dying out and disappearing.

Anyone looking at these photos can probably smell the scent of old books right now. If you live nearby, I can only recommend a visit. I picked up The Rider on the White Horse by Theodor Storm. However, I bought it as a new book—though with a very old-fashioned look—so, a kind of compromise between antiquarian charm and a modern reprint.

In any case, I plan to go hunting for beautiful antiquarian bookshops in Munich. I’m still searching for a lovely leather-bound fairy tale book with charming illustrations—thick and properly old school. So if anyone has a recommendation for me, please share! My classics, however, I’ll still get as new editions. A freshly printed book is simply smoother, feels better in the hand, and remains my favorite companion.

Like every bibliophile, I love small and cozy bookstores.
