When I started this blog, I was cautious at first and wanted to see what blogging about books would be like — whether it would be fun, extremely time-consuming, and whether I’d have enough interesting ideas for posts. Looking back now, I have to say that starting lesestunden.de was really a great idea. It motivates me to read more, I’ve made new connections and received inspiring suggestions, and reflecting on what I’ve read — as well as exchanging thoughts about it — is simply a lot of fun. After ten months, I can definitely say that I’ll keep going.

Initially, I started with a free theme, which I later heavily modified and customized. In the beginning, there’s a lot to test and to find out how well the whole blogging ecosystem — including social media — works and how it “ticks” for book bloggers. So far, the existing theme has served me quite well, but there were a few rough edges that bothered me. It was a bit too clean and neutral, the typography didn’t quite fit the literary theme, and overall, it could simply be better. Because of all my modifications, the theme was no longer updateable, so it was clear that something had to change.

Today’s the day — a new version of lesestunden.de with a fresh design is now online. I’ve reworked quite a lot so that lesestunden.de will be more appealing and practical for visitors. I’ve also incorporated feedback from my recent survey. Here’s an overview of the main updates:

The structure of the site is now much more photography-oriented. Since I love taking photos and it fits well with the blog’s theme, every post now begins with a photo of the respective book or topic. That’s much more inviting than simply showing a cover and a few key details. Overall, you’ll now find many more photos on lesestunden.de — after all, the eye reads along. I even rephotographed all the books featured in my older posts, so it’s worth browsing through the archives again.

At the top of the page, there’s now a slider highlighting the main focus topics — for example, my Mare books that I’ve been reading over the months and that keep appearing here, or books by Guy de Maupassant, one of my favorites this year. These sliders provide a mid-term overview of the recurring themes on lesestunden.de.

Reviews now start with my rating, and all the book details can be found at the bottom. The review itself should be the main focus.

The styling has been improved: the main menu is now sticky and always visible, and the review index is now organized by genre. Of course, the site is fully responsive again and works well on both tablets and smartphones.

<del>I’ll update the styling of the toplist over the next few days.</del>

I hope you like the new design and feel even more inspired to browse lesestunden.de — and that I can continue to spark your enthusiasm for great literature. If you find any errors or display issues in certain browsers or on specific devices, please leave a comment and let me know.

Since December of last year, I’ve been blogging about literature on lesestunden.de.
