I want to write a little about the love of beautiful books, because I suspect many of you feel the same. When I go looking for new books, the first big challenge is finding one that truly speaks to me and whose blurb genuinely draws me in. There’s no magic formula for that—it always depends on my mood and on the literary focus I’ve set for myself at the moment, the kind of reading I’m most in the mood for.

But that’s only half the story. I’ve always wanted a tale to be presented in a beautiful frame. A dog-eared, worn-out library copy simply doesn’t spark a desire to read in me, and yellowed, musty pages aren’t exactly enticing. I’m not a wealthy snob who only eats off golden plates, but when it comes to books I can’t help it—I ideally want a clean, new hardcover. Preferably with white pages and a finely chosen typeface, a handsome cloth binding, and a sturdy dust jacket or slipcase. Add to that a striking, artful cover design.

“Dangerous Work: Diary of an Arctic Adventure” by Arthur Conan Doyle, the elegant mare edition with slipcase.

Books in which both the content and outward appearance are outstanding are rare and hard to find. A lovely blog dedicated to beautiful books is Charlotte’s Besonders Buch. There’s also the Stiftung Buchkunst, which annually honors the most beautiful books—a very interesting source for especially well-designed volumes. Many of you probably know the Büchergilde, which also specializes in releasing especially fine editions—though, in my view, with mixed success: their designs haven’t convinced me so far (with the exception of Über Bord by Rudyard Kipling and Heart of a Dog by Mikhail Bulgakov)—but of course that’s always a matter of taste. On Petra’s blog Elementares Lesen you’ll also find beautiful non-fiction editions from time to time, and it shouldn’t go unmentioned here. Kathrin at Phantásiereisen likewise presents many gorgeous books—for example by the French illustrator Benjamin Lacombe, as well as English-language deluxe editions of classics.

“Südseejahre” by Robert Louis Stevenson, Fanny Stevenson—designed with great attention to detail. Also published by mare in the elegant slipcase series.

Beyond that, there are a number of publishers who are very skilled at creating beautiful books. I’m particularly fond of mare’s slipcase series and also the Hanser Classics reissues. But there are also numerous individual books that sometimes feel like small works of art—for example Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass, illustrated by Floor Rieder, or Die Zukunft des Mars by Georg Klein. If you browse my blog, you’ll find more very beautiful books—first and foremost the now fairly well-known S. — Ship of Theseus by J. J. Abrams and Doug Dorst.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll and Floor Rieder with color-matched headbands. A very beautiful new edition published by Gerstenberg Verlag.

I haven’t explored the graphic novel field enough yet and want to catch up on that. I do have a soft spot for illustrated volumes, not only in photography. Generally, though, I find it quite difficult to discover truly beautiful books. Of course I don’t choose my reading purely by looks. I appreciate dtv’s paperbacks—even though they tend to look well-worn after a single read—and the Diogenes editions, which are very appealing apart from the dust jacket. But books that are genuinely artful and crafted with lots of care are hard to find—and they always end up getting my vote. For classics, I often turn to the lovely Manesse editions, which I’ve written about many times.

Illustration by Michael Whelan for “Stone of Farewell” by Tad Williams. Osten Ard series in the first German edition.

I also greatly appreciate successful, beautiful illustrations. Together with a clean production, they can enrich a book immensely. I’m thinking of the drawings by Michael Whelan, who illustrated the first edition of Tad Williams’s Osten Ard saga. As he reports on his site, he will also be artistically accompanying the continuation of the Osten Ard series—and when I think of the sensitivity with which he managed to translate the mood, the landscapes, the winter, and the characters from the book into visual form, I’m all the more excited for the sequel.

The new German-language edition of the Osten Ard series was ultimately designed by the Turkish artist Kerem Beyit, and the books are enhanced there as well. I love artful illustrations, including game artwork—an art form in its own right—when you see how artists use drawing tablets, Photoshop, and a huge amount of talent to create wonderful images out of nothing. You can find some lovely pieces among my favorites on deviantart.com, and you can get a glimpse into the scene on CGSociety and several other sites. There’s an interesting video on YouTube showing how such an image is created.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1080" height="674" src="https://www.lesestunden.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/der_zauberer_von_oz_5.jpg" alt="The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L.
