I have a soft spot for beautiful illustrations and, when they reflect a story\u2019s content with great sensitivity and love of detail, they are a genuine enrichment for any book. Quite by chance, I came across this series<\/a> of children\u2019s classics lovingly designed by the illustrator Robert Ingpen<\/a>. I wasn\u2019t familiar with the Knesebeck Verlag<\/a> before, and it reminded me how many small publishers are hard to find yet have truly brilliant catalogues. And looking at the books from Knesebeck, I know that The Wonderful Wizard of Oz<\/em> will be the first of many that will make their way straight from this house onto my bookshelf.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

I\u2019d heard the title The Wonderful Wizard of Oz<\/em> a few times, but somehow the book never quite landed on my radar. This edition begins with a brief introduction that offers an overview of the author\u2019s life \u2014 which itself reads a bit like an adventure novel. The son of a wealthy businessman, Lyman Frank Baum launched many different ventures, few of which succeeded; more than once he was broke and in financial trouble. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz<\/em> and numerous further tales in that world appeared over the years, but beyond that you won\u2019t find many noteworthy publications by the author.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Dorothy, a young girl living on a lonely farm in the middle of Kansas, is swept up \u2014 house and all \u2014 by a cyclone and finds herself in the fairy-tale land of Oz. There she sets out in search of the Wizard of Oz, the only one who can help her return home to Kansas. As you\u2019d expect in a children\u2019s story, she meets a number of very different, fantastical beings who accompany her on her journey. The pace is brisk enough to keep things from getting dull, and the encounters and twists are genuinely entertaining. The language is quite simple but pleasant to read, making it ideal for reading aloud. Baum\u2019s prose is clear, and it\u2019s easy to imagine this world and slip right into it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Like so many of the books I\u2019ve been reviewing lately, this one is outstanding in terms of its visual qualities. Robert Ingpen is a gifted painter, and his sketch-like, beautiful, full-color illustrations \u2014 rendered with great attention to detail \u2014 make the book a true experience. As a book to read together, for children and parents alike, it\u2019s simply perfect; the illustrations render the text with such clear immediacy that they spark the imagination all the more and make this fairy-tale world spring vividly to mind.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

In terms of production quality, the hardcover is also very successful. The endpapers feature Ingpen\u2019s rough sketches; the paper is wonderfully thick; the illustrations fit the story perfectly, sometimes occupying a portion of the page and sometimes an entire double spread. Visually, the book is a real treat and easily outshines any TV show. I simply have to include lots of photos here, because the book\u2019s beautiful design is so striking \u2014 and that can be captured so well in images.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Conclusion:<\/strong> The Wonderful Wizard of Oz<\/em> from Knesebeck Verlag is one of the most beautiful children\u2019s books I\u2019ve seen. The story is a truly lovely adventure in a fairy-tale world that isn\u2019t only entertaining for children. Together with Robert Ingpen\u2019s gorgeous drawings \u2014 he\u2019s an insanely talented illustrator \u2014 the tale becomes even more tangible. As a read-aloud book, this edition is excellent and is sure to coax just about any child out from behind the stove. In terms of craftsmanship, it\u2019s firmly in the premium league, and for me it\u2019s clear that I\u2019ll be picking up all the other books in this series as well. You rarely find children\u2019s classics in such quality.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
