That’s mainly because I usually have a pretty good instinct for books. And also because I’m currently not exploring too many new paths, but rather plundering my familiar authors and genres. Still, I regularly sort things out and keep finding old books that I’m sure I won’t read again. So pretty quickly, I had a decent stack of books sitting in the basement, and I wondered what to do with them. Since I love book exchange cabinets — even though I rarely take anything from them — we decided to set one up in front of our house. Pretty ideal, since I pass by it every day and am basically sitting right at the source.

Right next to the garden gate we found a great spot to place a little cabinet — right by the street and easy to spot. We live in a residential area, not smack in the middle of a big city, but quite a few people walk down our street, so we were hopeful that the little cabinet would be used. And indeed, just a few hours after setting it up, several passersby had already stopped to take a look. In the following days, someone even put books inside. So things are looking good, and I hope word spreads and it becomes well used.

The little cabinet was built by my better half. Unfortunately, I have two left hands and would only have injured myself building it. From an old kitchen wall cabinet and a few supplies from the hardware store, my sweetheart crafted a really beautiful and charming little house. I love the bright color, the blue accents, and the elegant lettering. Perfect down to the last detail — and nice and eye-catching too.

A small sign reminds everyone that anyone can take or leave books here, making it immediately clear that this little cabinet is for everyone. And the cabinet wasn’t expensive either, although a trip to the hardware store always adds up. At first, we wanted to install a hinge so that the flap could open upward, but those are really pricey. The small hinge strips are quite good, low-budget, and the two doors are more practical and prettier. For the plexiglass panels, we bought two picture frames at Ikea. They’re much cheaper than plexiglass from the hardware store and already come in a very suitable size. So, if you look around a bit, you can find inexpensive components that still look fantastic.

I don’t think it makes much sense to advertise this particular open bookcase, since a open bookcase only makes sense if it’s nearby (you can find a list of public book exchange cabinets on Wikipedia). But maybe my post will inspire some of you to build a lovely book exchange cabinet of your own. I think it’s a great idea — and since very few books can be resold for a good price, this is a wonderful way to pass on sorted-out books and discover new ones at the same time. I’m definitely curious to see how well our little cabinet will catch on.

What about you? Do you use book exchange cabinets?
