Since then, users have been able to find public book boxes in German-speaking countries via an Android app or the map on the website. Until now, iPhone owners had to make do with the web version. But a lot has happened in this short time, and here’s what’s new.

The biggest update is an iPhone app developed by Stefan Trauth, now available in the Apple App Store. Several iOS developers reached out to me, which I really appreciated. The iPhone’s popularity naturally fosters a vibrant developer community, and now all iPhone owners can enjoy a book cabinet app too. The data is centrally managed, and the iPhone app, Android app, and website all display identical information.

When the BuchschrankFinder first went live, I had about 1,300 public book cabinets compiled from various data sources. By now, over 1,800 book cabinets are listed — thanks to the many diligent users of the app and website. I was surprised to see how many such cabinets exist in Germany and hadn’t realized how popular the concept was. But even our own little cabinet has become quite busy, and seeing how quickly word spread and how many people use it now, it’s no wonder there are so many across the country.

What also contributed greatly to the project’s success were press reports, which brought many new users to the app. The BuchschrankFinder has been featured on heise.de, ComputerBase, and Caschy’s blog at stadt-bremerhaven.de, each time resulting in noticeable spikes of new submissions for new or updated book cabinets. I hope participation and engagement will continue, keeping the database current and ensuring accurate results. Through the Android app and website, users can report new or removed cabinets; this feature will be added to the iPhone app in the coming weeks.

At this point, I’d like to thank everyone who participated, reported new book cabinets, the editors who covered this project, and of course Stefan, who developed the iPhone app.

Update: The BuchschrankFinder app was also featured on Spiegel.de and Chip.de.

Two weeks ago, I released an app and website for locating public book exchange cabinets.
