Books are something very personal. Something quite private that initially concerns only oneself—and sharing that is rather difficult. How can you really share the great adventures, the vivid and emotionally charged images that form in your own mind? In my view, that’s not easily possible. At this point, a quote from “The Shadow of the Wind” by Carlos Ruiz Zafón fits perfectly:

Every book has a soul. The soul of the person who wrote it, and the souls of those who have read it, lived it, and dreamed about it.

Nevertheless, I’m starting this blog. Because it’s quite difficult to find good books. And because it’s interesting to share thoughts about a book with others and to reflect on one’s own impressions again.

This is a picture of my fully packed bookshelf (or rather a section of it). I’ll post a better one later, since the books are arranged by color, which looks stylish and invites browsing. That’s what I’ll be doing over the next few days—to get started with a few reviews. Because, of course, that’s supposed to be the main focus of this blog: book reviews.

How This Blog Came to Be

I read a lot. My commute to work takes more than an hour one way, and the S-Bahn ride is exclusively reading time. Every day. So I have plenty of time to devour books. Thanks to my iPod, I’m undisturbed and dive day after day into foreign worlds, great adventures, and exciting ideas from both well-known and lesser-known authors. But I don’t want to write too much about myself just yet—I’ll catch up on that later, of course.

Now there are two more questions I absolutely want to clarify at this point:

How the Name “Lesestunden” Came About

I spend many hours reading. Mostly on the S-Bahn, but often at home as well. This blog is all about those hours. The name, therefore, says it all.

Which Genres Will Be Covered Here

When it comes to books, I do have a general line, but I’m still quite inconsistent at times. That’s why my reading queue is usually rather short. It can easily happen that I come across an interesting topic somewhere, and then I start looking for books about it. So you’ll get a good mix here. Sometimes I read commercial bestsellers, sometimes completely unknown books. Sometimes stories, less often (but occasionally) nonfiction. In general, I’ll be covering genres like classics, fantasy, historical novels (less often recently), novels, short stories, an occasional light read, and nonfiction. Excluded for me are thrillers, crime novels, biographies, science fiction, and poetry—you won’t find any of those here. But I don’t want to ramble too much: soon there will be the first reviews, and it’ll quickly become clear what I like.

Well, I’ve written and talked quite a bit now. I hope you’ll enjoy my new blog. Feel free to give me feedback, share your thoughts, and discuss with me. I’m definitely looking forward to sharing my treasures with you and hope that one or two of you will be inspired to pick up a great book.

For a long time, I’ve been thinking about it, but now I’ve decided to start a book blog.
