Most recently, I read about him in my literature book, but even then, I decided against reading his work in favor of tackling my towering pile of unread books. However, when Jude the Obscure appeared in the Hanser Klassiker preview, I couldn’t resist. The series of elegant and high-quality classics includes so many outstanding works that when a new title appears in focus, it’s almost always worth reading. So it quickly made its way onto my list—and then onto my reading pile.

The novel, told in an omniscient narrative style, recounts the life of Jude Fawley, a boy from the countryside who grows up in modest circumstances with his aunt and develops an early thirst for knowledge. He teaches himself Latin and Greek and dreams of studying in Christminster (Oxford). But as a working-class child, he is denied access to higher education and instead becomes a stonemason and church restorer. At the same time, the novel tells of Jude’s tumultuous love life and his struggle between faith and love, between passion and the moral expectations of society. Set against the backdrop of British society at the turn of the century, the story takes place in the rural regions of North Wessex and the university city of Oxford.

Jude’s unfulfilled yearning for education drew me in from the very beginning, and I found it fascinating to read about his first independent steps in life. But when his relationships came into focus, the book truly gripped me. It is highly engaging and entertaining to follow his pursuit of love, to see how his convictions and worldview are repeatedly shaken, and how he evolves through it all. The plot took many unexpected turns, and I often caught myself picking up the book again to find out what would happen next and how the story would unfold. Its entertainment value is undoubtedly high.

As the reading progresses, it becomes clear that Thomas Hardy intended to bring several central themes into focus and explore them from different angles. His protagonists put the institution of marriage to a serious test, reevaluating it by their own standards, and live in what was then considered a scandalous common-law relationship for Victorian society. They question prevailing social and religious beliefs, and Hardy demonstrates the immense difficulties his characters faced within those societal structures. The novel addresses the lack of educational opportunities for the working class, religious attitudes toward marriage and divorce, the role of women, and how society—particularly the working class—treats individuals who don’t conform to conservative ideals.

Overall, the book paints a rather pessimistic picture, and together with its criticism of the Christian conception of marriage and its, for the time, relatively bold sexual allusions, the novel provoked considerable controversy upon publication—so much so that Hardy gave up writing novels altogether and devoted himself entirely to poetry thereafter. From today’s perspective, of course, the story no longer contains anything shocking; in an era where cohabitation, divorce, and patchwork families are common, there’s nothing scandalous or offensive here. At the same time, the novel shows how moral values have evolved and how long the journey has been toward a worldview of individual freedom, as largely achieved in our society today. It’s also telling how the protagonists are socially ostracized. If one looks at how people treat each other on social media today, it becomes clear that while enlightenment has taken hold in some respects, much of society remains stuck in the same patterns as 150 years ago. The novel is therefore anything but outdated, and considering certain current political debates, it’s striking how society’s reaction to the unconventional couple mirrors modern attitudes in other areas as well.

In terms of style and language, the reading experience hardly feels like that of a classic. It’s written in a very smooth and fluid manner, which, combined with the story and the unpredictable actions of the protagonists, makes it a highly enjoyable read. I finished the book rather quickly. What bothered me, however, were the artificial situations and the believability of the story. I often felt that the plot was somewhat contrived, and that the characters served more as examples to illustrate moral and social viewpoints than as fully realized individuals. In his afterword, the editor Alexander Pechmann mentions that Hardy sympathized with Schopenhauer’s philosophy and that this book can be seen as a kind of “laboratory experiment” in which he tests it for “practicality” (p. 624). That seems entirely plausible to me, though the somewhat artificial-sounding dialogues and reactions of the characters often felt inauthentic. Perhaps that’s also because Hardy was, after all, a British author—with all the traits that entails. There are passages where the characters reflect quite rationally; whereas with a French author, at least one of them would have been lying at the other’s feet, soaking them with tears. Put differently: while the French would have gone wild, the British prefer to ponder the situation pensively over a cup of tea by the fire.

As already mentioned, Thomas Hardy was a British author who lived from 1840 to 1928 and, like his protagonist Jude, worked as a church restorer in Wessex. His novels are also set in this region, and the book apparently includes some autobiographical elements, with Jude resembling Hardy himself in certain ways. At least, the afterword suggests as much, although Hardy himself denied this (p. 619).

All in all, I found the story compelling and entertaining, though the fate of the characters and their love story didn’t fully move me, and I only moderately empathized with them. Hardy doesn’t succumb to sentimentality; he maintains a certain distance from his characters and doesn’t seek to evoke excessive sympathy or emotion. Of course, there is some emotional resonance, but not to the depth I’ve experienced in many other works. There are also moments of humor that made me smile more than once.

The edition once again arrives in the familiar Hanser Klassiker quality: thread binding, two ribbon bookmarks, excellent color coordination, a thick, smooth dust jacket, and, of course, a rich appendix. As always, there’s nothing to complain about. I already own several books by editor and translator Alexander Pechmann, and his work consistently delivers top-tier quality—one can’t go wrong there. I also found the afterword excellent; in a concise scope, it offers several interesting insights. Altogether, it’s a very well-rounded edition.

Conclusion: The life and love stories of Jude Fawley form a captivating and engaging narrative that questions the religious and social conventions of its time, while sharply criticizing the educational inequalities and the institution of marriage of that era. Although the pleasantly readable style made for an enjoyable experience, the emotional distance from the characters and the somewhat contrived plot kept me from being completely convinced. With its annotations, Alexander Pechmann’s excellent translation, and the beautiful Hanser edition, the book remains a clear recommendation. It is, without a doubt, a worthwhile read.

Book information: Jude the Obscure • Thomas Hardy • Hanser Verlag • 640 pages • ISBN 9783446258280

Thomas Hardy is an author I’ve come across repeatedly, but who has never quite managed to capture my full attention.
