Strange, really, because I think the idea behind it is wonderful. Ex libris are pasted-in labels or stamps that identify the owner of a book. It’s not exactly a new idea—according to Wikipedia, ex libris first appeared in the 15th century. Quite a charming tradition, and after lending out a few books that never found their way back to me, it quickly became clear that I needed my own ex libris. You can’t hesitate with things like that—on vacation you don’t wait long to mark your lounge chair early in the morning with your towel either ;) (okay, not entirely true, I’ve never actually gone on a boring beach holiday).

The picture above shows my ex libris stamp. Naturally, I didn’t want a mass-produced stamp, so I searched the internet thoroughly. I came across a talented artist from Stockholm who had made a ship-themed ex libris stamp for her sister. The artist’s name is Tian Gan, and she used to have a website (sadly now offline) where she offered her stamps—some with very nerdy designs. There were some truly beautiful motifs among them.

I found a ship to be a perfect choice of motif. It expresses, on many levels, what excites me about literature—setting off on journeys in my mind, experiencing adventure, venturing out onto a sea full of unknown impressions. But it also works quite literally, since I love books about the sea, about pirates and privateers (a setting that, sadly, isn’t very popular—at least I haven’t found many good pirate books). I also really like the simplicity of the design.

Tian modified the original design she had made for her sister and replaced the skull and crossed sabers with the flower from my homepage (basically my logo). You can see the result in these pictures.

I’m absolutely thrilled with the excellent quality and the personalized design.
