My reading output is currently quite modest — I still haven’t managed to reestablish a regular reading time during my commute. On top of that, few books have truly caught my interest in recent weeks. I’ve read a few nonfiction works, but I tend not to review them when they touch on very personal topics — such as philosophical or religious ideas. Overall, I just haven’t been reading that much lately, so there’s not a lot to blog about here either.

The Advent season and Christmas were, of course, filled with lots of family time. In the evenings, we watched one or two movies — mostly Christmas classics. From time to time, I’ve also played some Magic, or followed the small and manageable Magic scene on YouTube. And of course, every now and then, I indulge in the pleasure of listening to a beautiful record. That’s how the short winter evenings tend to pass — very atmospheric, but not very productive when it comes to reading.

At the moment, I’m reading The Wild Ass’s Skin by Honoré de Balzac, and as usual with Balzac, it’s simply another masterpiece. I’ll continue to enjoy this delightful read over the next few days. This means I’ve picked up volume 11 of my complete Balzac edition — not much left now until I’ve read all of his La Comédie humaine. He remains the undisputed grand master — the author I’ve read the most, and whose style, depth of storytelling, and poetic language are simply unmatched.

Looking at my wish list, I’m still missing the latest Mare classic, In Alastalo’s Parlour by Volter Kilpi. The book is quite tempting — the sample I read revealed a wonderfully rich language. At the same time, with over 1,000 pages and a plot that sounds rather demanding, it’s definitely a challenge. It’s not a book one reads casually on the side. So it’s still on my wish list, waiting for the right moment to draw me in. In the same category is The Captive by Marcel Proust, which was published some time ago by Manesse in a very appealing edition. I’ll get both books sooner or later, but I’ll need to get back into a better reading flow first.

The previews for next year offer only a few books that caught my interest. Brothers of the Wind by Tad Williams is already on preorder. The conclusion of his new series, The Last King of Osten Ard, has been delayed and will apparently be even longer than expected. In English, there will be four books, and in the German translation by Klett-Cotta, each one will be split again into two volumes. I already have the second volume (or rather, the third and fourth in German) sitting unread on my shelf. But I won’t read any of them until the final book is released. Then I’ll start the tetralogy from the beginning. With long interruptions, I lose track of the story and forget too many details. Reading it all at once is just such a pleasure — you get completely lost in the world, and Tad Williams is simply my absolute favorite fantasy author. I did the same thing back then with Shadowmarch, and it was an absolute joy. Anyway, it’ll be a while until The Last King of Osten Ard continues, and to shorten the wait, Tad Williams has pulled the short story Brothers of the Wind out of his hat. I’m expecting a very atmospheric and worthwhile interlude in the world of Osten Ard — and he’s already proven he can do that brilliantly with The Burning Man years ago.

The Mare Verlag already has the next classic lined up for next spring: Deephaven by Sarah Orne Jewett. I wasn’t familiar with the author before, but she comes with excellent references (Henry James, Mark Twain, and Rudyard Kipling all admired her work). An American author focusing on evocative small harbor towns — that’s exactly my thing. I’ll definitely be reading that one.

The classics announced by Hanser Verlag for next spring didn’t convince me. Joseph Conrad’s Lord Jim will be reissued. His novel The Nigger of the ‘Narcissus’, which was last published by Mare Verlag, was quite good, but overall, his writing style doesn’t make me want to pick up another of his books. I didn’t particularly enjoy The Shadow Line from Hanser either, so I’ll pass on this one too. Another book by Isaac Babel is coming out, but his My First Fee didn’t impress me at all. Manesse Verlag also has nothing noteworthy coming up next spring. Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf is featured yet again — in what feels like the hundred-millionth new edition. I read it a few years ago and it absolutely wasn’t my cup of tea. For me, it’s too experimental, and the stream-of-consciousness technique completely falls flat in this novel. Like Ulysses, it feels artificial and contrived — a book that, for me, conveys nothing at all. When I look at Balzac’s novels and see what literature is capable of, I can’t help but tune out from such pseudo-literature. However, I still have The Captive by Marcel Proust on my wish list from Manesse Verlag. There’s a good chance it’ll flop for me too, since Proust is known for a similar style. But I haven’t read anything by him yet, and since he’s so celebrated in the literary world, I’d like to see if I’m missing something. And The Captive seems like the perfect place to start testing the waters.

All in all, not much is being added to my wish list for next spring — but that’s no problem, since my queue is still full, and good literature certainly won’t run out. On top of that, there are a few games I want to play. So Lesestunden.de will continue as usual, just at a moderate pace. Drop by from time to time — the books that appear here will be even more carefully curated than ever. With that, I wish you all a wonderful new year filled with many great books worth reading.

How about you? Which books are you most looking forward to? Which ones are definitely on your list — and what were your literary highlights of 2021?
