Book blogs are always a great source of good reading tips, and that’s how I came across Karin’s blog and the book Daddy-Long-Legs. Karin always stages her book photography beautifully, and the elegant design of this edition caught my eye. The Königskinder Verlag, an imprint of Carlsen Verlag aiming to bring stylish young adult literature to readers, had not really been on my radar so far. But it just goes to show that it’s worth wandering off the beaten path now and then — this imprint hides a wonderful new edition of a classic that was originally published back in 1912. The blurb reminded me a bit of Great Expectations by Dickens, which made me twice as curious.
The story itself is quickly told: the young orphan Judy Abbott grows up in an orphanage and stands out for her literary talent. At almost 18, she is too old to stay there, and a mysterious benefactor finances her studies at a university. The only condition: she must regularly write letters to her unknown sponsor, who will never reply directly to her, and when he does, it’s only through his secretary. Only the first few pages are written in the omniscient narrator’s voice and briefly describe Judy’s sudden stroke of luck. The rest of the novel consists entirely of Judy’s letters, written over the four years of her college life.
I really enjoyed the lively and simple style of the letters — it perfectly suits a young girl taking her first steps into the wider world. While they aren’t particularly profound, they are very entertaining. Once you start reading, it’s both relaxing and fun to follow Judy’s thoughts and experiences, and in the end, it feels like a good TV series night — at some point, you just can’t stop reading. Loosened up by sketches and many half-filled pages created by the letter format, it only takes an evening to read the roughly 250 pages. It’s a perfect book for in between, for unwinding and relaxing.
Jean Webster was an American author and journalist who mainly focused on women’s issues. Reading her biography, it becomes clear that she wove her own college experiences into Daddy-Long-Legs. After graduation, she moved to New York to become a writer — so it’s no surprise that her protagonist shares the same ambition. As the niece of Mark Twain, Jean Webster was certainly in good literary company.
The book’s design is definitely worth mentioning. It’s lovingly crafted, and the dust jacket alone is beautifully done. The hardcover is decorated with a delicate floral pattern that is also echoed inside. Even the spine title is elegantly framed, and overall, the book is a pleasure to look at. It also includes illustrations by Franz Regner, which are quite simple but match Judy’s style and character perfectly.
With its beautiful design and the lightness that this classic carries, this edition really impressed me. Apparently, producing more elaborate and high-quality books was one of the Königskinder Verlag’s goals — a vision that led to several awards and attracted a dedicated readership. Unfortunately, it seems there weren’t enough buyers, and according to what I read here, the publisher will be releasing its final program next spring. Aside from cookbooks, beautifully made books don’t seem to be in great demand, which I find a real shame. As regular readers of my blog know, I love beautiful, well-crafted editions — and looking at the current selection, there are simply too few of them.
Conclusion: I really enjoyed Daddy-Long-Legs. It was very entertaining — light reading for an evening and perfect for a relaxed reading session in between. The story is quite predictable, and the letters aren’t particularly deep, but with Judy’s refreshing tone and cheerful style, I was completely drawn in. The design is excellent — with its subtle floral patterns, lovely color choices, and fitting sketches, this edition truly won me over visually. It definitely has a permanent place in our bookshelf. Anyone who enjoys young adult literature will surely like this book, and it also makes a perfect gift.

das ist nur der erste Band. Ich hab gar nicht mitbekommen, dass es da auch noch weiter ging. Gibt es von der Fortsetzung auch eine schöne und empfehlenswerte Ausgabe?

Es gibt sogar einen dritten Band, wasch jetzt auch nicht wusste. Ob es den zweiten Band nun auch bibliophil gibt kann ich dir gar nicht sagen, du weisst ja, die meisten meiner Bücher bestehen nur aus Nullen und Einsen, nicht aus Papier, Stoff und Leder.

Das werde ich mir auf jeden Fall holen, denn bibliophil ist er damit ganz sicher. Leider aber wird es dann den dritten Band im Königskinder Verlag nie geben :(

Vielen lieben Dank erst einmal für die Erwähnung! Das Kompliment mit “gut in Szene gesetzt” kann ich aber nur zurückgeben.: ) Ich war auch sofort angetan von der sehr schönen Gestaltung, welche einem gar nicht so häufig bei Jugenbüchern begegnet.
“Die Geschichte ist sehr vorhersehbar, die Briefe nicht sonderlich tiefgründig, aber mit der Leichtigkeit und dem erfrischenden Stil von Judy hat es mich doch gefesselt.”
– Vorhersehbar ist die Geschichte tatsächlich ein wenig, aber ich finde die Briefe haben so eine unausgesprochene Tiefgründigkeit. Liest man sie nur, dann wirken sie natürlich sehr direkt und so, als sei bereits alles gesagt. Aber wenn man sich etwas mit dem Charakter der Protagonistin beschäftigt, dann finde ich kann man ganz schön herauslesen, wie sie sich selbst als Jugendliche weiterentwickelt und wie sie mit der ‘Aufgabe’ umgeht, eine berufliche Laufbahn wählen zu müssen. : ) Bei der Leichtigkeit stimme ich dir aber auch zu, denn man kann das Buch, wie du sagst, wunderbar an einem Tag auslesen und es eignet sich perfekt für Zwischendurch.

Da hast du recht, die charakterliche Entwicklung von Judy wurde in den Briefen durchaus deutlich. Gerade die Unsicherheit in den ersten Briefen und die Anlaufschwierigkeiten, aber dann auch das zunehmende Selbstbewusstsein in den späteren Briefen ist deutlich zu spüren. Wobei das Vergnügen eher darin liegt diesen Entwicklungsprozess zu folgen, sowie ihren erfrischenden Berichten und weniger in den Erkenntnissen der Protagonistin. Was allerdings auch ok ist, denn gerade das trägt ja zur Leichtigkeit des Buches bei.

Du hast sehr schön geschrieben. Und ich bin einer Meinung mit dir, man sollte zwar nicht nur auf das Cover achten, jedoch finde ich es sehr schön, wenn man sich Mühe bei der Gestaltung eines Buches gibt. Je ausgefallener, desto besser und desto schöner machen sie sich im Bücherregal. :)
