Pimp my book: Preparing books for the small purse
For the perfect reading experience, I also need a beautiful edition that feels good in my hands and has an appealing design. I usually prefer elegant hardcover editions and tend to avoid shabby, old, or plain books. Unfortunately, it’s often unavoidable that some less attractive books end up on the unread pile — after all, the content is what truly matters. My twelve-volume complete edition of Honoré de Balzac, edited by Ernst Sander, is a borderline case. In this post, I’ll tell you how I managed to spruce up these books on a small budget.
If you’re not familiar with Balzac, I recommend this post of mine, in which I introduce the great master of literature. After devouring a whole stack of Balzac’s books, I quickly realized that it wasn’t worth buying all of his works individually. Balzac’s La Comédie humaine consists of over 90 novels, which he himself constantly reordered and reclassified. So I began searching for a complete edition, which unfortunately is now only available second-hand (a telling sign of the intellectual state of this country). In the end, I chose the edition published by Goldmann Verlag, compiled by Ernst Sander, which turned out to be perfect. With numerous annotations, contextual information on each work, summaries of key characters, and high-quality translations, it offers top-notch quality. I eagerly devoured several volumes and knew that they deserved a permanent place of honor on my bookshelf.
As far as the print and binding of these over 40-year-old books are concerned, they’re in excellent condition. However, the dust jackets, the faux-leather bindings — which have cracked at the joints between cover and spine — and the missing ribbon bookmarks left much to be desired. So I headed out to Schwabing in Munich and asked a few traditional bookbinders what it would cost to have all twelve books rebound in fine linen with two ribbon markers each. The quotes were sobering: between 350 and 450 euros in total. Considering the materials and craftsmanship that go into rebinding, that’s perfectly understandable. But since the existing bindings were still intact and the leather covers actually looked quite nice, I decided against it.
Still, it bothered me, so I decided to upgrade the books myself — and I’m very happy with the results. But first, here’s a photo of what they used to look like:
The Dust Jackets
After just one read, the already brittle dust jackets were completely ruined, as you can see in the photo above. Their design wasn’t exactly a knockout either. I’ve always admired the classic editions from Hanser Verlag, especially their edition of War and Peace. They did everything right with those, and I wanted my new Balzac dust jackets to look similar. So I got myself a desktop publishing program and designed jackets inspired by War and Peace. Microsoft Word or Adobe Photoshop wouldn’t really cut it for this, since the dimensions need to be exact — and as each book has a different thickness, you have to measure carefully to ensure the printed result fits perfectly. That’s no problem with software like the free Scribus or professional tools like QuarkXPress or Adobe InDesign. Anyone with a bit of tech affinity will get the hang of these quickly, and for a one-time project, even a trial version is more than enough.
The next question was which images to use for the covers. Since La Comédie humaine is set during the Restoration period in France — the first half of the 19th century — the covers should reflect that. Balzac wrote about all levels of society, but I find his novels about the aristocracy and their intrigues the most fascinating. Of course, high-resolution images are needed for dust jackets, so small photos or paintings from the web weren’t sufficient. After some searching, I discovered Google Arts & Culture, which lets you browse museum collections by institution and location. The Palace of Versailles Museum became my main treasure trove. You can’t download the images directly from Google, but by searching the artwork titles, you can easily find high-resolution versions on Wikipedia. It’s a bit anachronistic, admittedly — the Ancien Régime is a recurring theme and starting point for Balzac, but his novels actually take place some fifty years later. Still, I found the paintings very fitting and visually appealing. I tried to choose artwork that matched each book’s content — for example, for Splendeurs et misères des courtisanes (Scenes from a Courtesan’s Life), which includes the story of Marie-Antoinette’s attempted escape from the Conciergerie, I used her image; for the rural scenes, I chose pastoral paintings. Finding the right paintings took more effort than the design itself.
In the end, I had six PDF files, each with two jackets formatted for A2 printing. I then went back to Munich to a highly rated copy shop to have them printed. The result was just what I expected — and what often happens when you go into a physical store. The unmotivated employee only offered me an A2 poster print for 17 euros per sheet, which wasn’t the right paper type at all. So I went home, searched online again, and eventually found a much better option.
At Digitaldruck Fabrik, you can get prints on matte MaxiSilk 250 g paper for about two euros per A2 sheet. According to their site, the printing is eco-friendly, high-resolution, and UV- and weather-resistant for up to six months. It sounded too good to be true for that price — but the results were excellent. The paper feels premium, the paintings have superb sharpness and detail, the colors are vivid, and the dust jackets look truly high-quality.
Now the question was: how durable are these jackets? After carrying one book with me on the train for two weeks, the cover still looked great. Even small water droplets didn’t affect the colors. The only issue I noticed was a bit of rubbing when shelving the books — the front edge of one cover slightly transferred color to the back of the next.
Since that was on an unprinted white area, I was able to remove it easily with a baby wipe (it happened to be within reach). I’ll need to keep an eye on this behavior, but so far the long-term durability seems promising — the prints look very robust and well-made.
The Binding
The books are bound in simple faux leather. They look quite nice, but on the first three volumes — which had clearly been read before — the binding cracked where the book opens, and the spine detached completely. The glued binding itself, however, held up well. So I ordered a roll of Tesa fabric tape from Amazon for €1.85. Unfortunately, it wasn’t available in the same deep burgundy as the covers, but the brown tone blended in nicely and adhered perfectly. It was a bit too wide, so I had to cut it lengthwise — ideally a two-person job. The result turned out great.
The Ribbon Bookmarks
The missing ribbon bookmarks really bothered me. Each volume contains several novels, each followed by notes and a character index, which I often refer to. Two bookmarks would make flipping back and forth much easier. Eventually, I started using sticky notes, but that wasn’t ideal either. So, I decided on two ribbons: one red, matching the leather cover, and one blue, matching the subtle accent color on the spine titles of my new dust jackets.
You can order ready-made bookmarks online at lesebaendchen.com. The idea is clever: each ribbon has an adhesive strip on one end that you stick between the spine and the text block. They make for a nice gift, but in the end, they’re just regular silk ribbons you can buy cheaply at any craft store. With a bit of tape, you can easily make them yourself. However, I wasn’t fond of the look of the silk ribbons — I wanted the same braided style used in hardcover books. I soon found specialized bookbinding shops selling them, though only in large quantities and with steep shipping costs. Eventually, I found the right colors at The Solution Shop and ordered two rolls for €26 including shipping. I only used a fraction, so I could easily add ribbons to many more books — and I probably will, since it’s so easy to do.
Just like the ready-made ones, I attached two ribbons side by side onto a strip of double-sided tape, inserted it between the spine and the text block, and pressed it down firmly. We had some strong crafting tape at home, and it worked perfectly. The ribbons hold securely, and I honestly wouldn’t have expected it to work so easily. Visually, there’s no difference from factory-bound books with ribbons — even where they emerge above the headband.
Conclusion
If you have cherished books with a few cosmetic flaws, you can fix quite a lot with a modest budget and some effort. I was pleasantly surprised by how affordable it is to print custom dust jackets and to retrofit ribbon bookmarks. Now, I have a truly beautiful edition that I enjoy holding even more than before.
Perhaps these tips will help you restore your own beloved books — those that are no longer available to buy or whose editions you’ve grown attached to. To everyone who has ever done their own book repairs: Do you have any advice for me on what else can be done? I’d love to hear your feedback on the topic.
Update 01.10.2021: Several years have passed now, and the bindings have stood the test of time. Three of the twelve books remain unread, but all the covers still look great, even after being carried around a lot (on the train, etc.). They definitely hold up as well as any standard dust jacket.

Deinen Beitrag habe ich mal abgespeichert und werde das dann auch mal ausprobieren.
Dazu dass sich die Farbe löst hätte ich vielleicht eine Idee. Zumindest bei Kunstbildern mit Kreide hilft manchmal Haarspray, um alles zu fixieren. Vielleicht wäre das auch in diesem Fall geeignet, aber keine Ahnung, ob das tatsächlich eine gute Idee ist :)

hm, ob Haarspray funktioniert ist die Frage und ob das nicht Flecken macht. Für ein Buch habe ich vor, mir noch einen schönen Umschlag zu machen, da werde ich das mal an einem kleinen Stück Verschnitt testen. Die Idee ist auf jeden Fall nicht schlecht.

Wow, einfach, wow! Da hast du wirklich eine Menge Arbeit reingesteckt, aber das Ergebnis kann sich echt sehen lassen. Die Bücher sehen nun ja fast wie neu aus und die Schutzumschläge wirken sehr professionell. Ich selbst kann ja nicht mal sauber und schadenfrei mit Schere und Kleber umgehen, sodass mit Ergebnisse wie deine nicht mal im Ansatz gelingen würden. Aber vielleicht probiere ich mich irgendwann doch einmal an ein, zwei “Verjüngskuren”. :)

am Ende war das gar kein so großer Aufwand. Nachdem es ja zwölf Bücher sind, hätte ich nicht gedacht, dass das so fix umgesetzt ist. Allerdings sind die Bücher ja alle identisch vom Design und ich musste nur die Texte und Bilder anpassen. Aber fürs Ausschneiden usw. ist mir auch meine bessere Hälfte zu Hilfe geeilt. Da habe ich auch zwei linke Hände und hätte mich wahrscheinlich nur selbst verletzt ;)

In meiner kleinen Buchbinderwerkstatt repariere ich ab und zu alte Bücher. Es ist ein Hobby und macht sehr viel Spaß.

Als Flohmarkt und eBay Käufer fallen mir natürlich auch immer wieder Bücher mit kaputtem Schutzumschlag in die Hände, da ist das doch eine willkommene Idee mit den selbstgestalteten Umschlägen. Ich nehme den Schutzumschlag übrigens aber zum Lesen und wenn ich das Buch mitnehme immer ab und benutze ihn sozusagen nur wenn das Buch im Regal steht — auch wenn das vermutlich nicht Sinn des Schutzumschlages ist ;-).

so viele alte Bücher habe ich ja nicht und am Ende muss einen das schon ein Buch wert sein. Aber ich kann mir gut vorstellen, dass in Deinem Regal das ein oder andere exotische Buch steht. Du bist ja auch immer sehr neben dem Mainstream unterwegs.
Die Schutzumschläge abzunehmen habe ich mir auch schon überlegt. Aber ich hab mir vor einigen Jahren einen sehr praktischen Rucksack gekauft und da lassen sich meine Bücher immer hervorragend verstauen, ohne das etwas einreißt oder Knicke entstehen. Das war früher bei meinem Rucksack immer anders, da sahen die Bücher danach immer ziemlich zerschunden aus.

Tobi – die Schutzumschläge sehen grandios aus und haben tatsächlich die selbe Klasse wie die Hanser-Bände! Das hast Du großartig umgesetzt. Ich habe übrigens dieselbe Ausgabe, allerdings in zweiter Auflage (Bertelsmann). Diese Ausgabe ist in Leinen gebunden, leider auch in Klebebindung (die aber relativ gut ist). Die Schutzumschläge dieser zweiten Auflage sind aus meiner Sicht noch hässlicher als die der ersten! – Ich habe soeben mal gegoogelt betreffs Fixierung der Umschlagoberfläche: Was ich auf die Schnelle gefunden habe, klingt nicht sehr ermutigend: Fixative enthalten Lösungsmittel, Lacke lösen manchmal die Farben an oder kleben lange nach oder machen das Papier wellig, Laminierungen lösen sich manchmal nach einer gewissen Zeit wieder ab (wenn das überhaupt bei Buchumschlägen richtig funktioniert – einige Anwender im Netz bezweifeln das) usw. Vielleicht finde ich aber noch was dazu. – Übrigens mache ich das bei meinen Büchern wie Harald – beim Lesen nehme ich die Umschläge immer ab …

sehr schön, dass Dir die Umschläge auch gut gefallen. In den 70ern haben sie scheinbar nicht so großen Wert auf eine schöne Gestaltung gelegt. Aus der Zeit gibt es so einige Bücher, die von der Umschlaggestaltung einfach gruselig sind. Bei meiner Ausgabe war jedes Buch in einem “Schuber”, was nichts anderes als ein getackerter Pappdeckel war. Sehr übel sag ich Dir. Der Aufwand muss einem ein Buch schon wert sein und Balzac ist das auf jeden Fall.
Mit der Fixierung ist wahrscheinlich tatsächlich nicht viel zu machen. Mit Laminierungen habe ich bei Poster schon schlechte Erfahrung gemacht. Ich werde mal beobachten, wie sich die Umschläge auf längere Zeit so machen. So lange das Abfärben sich auf das jetzige Verhalten beschränkt, mache ich mir keine großen Sorgen. Das ist echt okay und lässt sich ja an den Kanten sogar abwischen.

ich bin sowas von begeistert von deinem Werk, tolle Idee und toll umgesetzt. Und verständlich beschrieben für den, der es nachmachen möchte. Mir sind die Umschläge nie so wichtig gewesen, aber nach deiner Beschreibung würd ich mich gern hinsetzen und auch neue machen :D.

einen schönen Schutzumschlag kann ich durchaus etwas abgewinnen. In dem Fall kann man tatsächlich auch ganz gut das eigentliche Buch kaschieren. Sehr interessant fand ich es, diesmal einmal selbst auf den Umschlag Einfluss zu nehmen. Normalerweise muss man da ja hinnehmen was geboten wird ;)

deine Restaurationen sind wirklich schick geworden. Und Appetit auf Balzac hast du mir jetzt auch gemacht. Allerdings sind die vorhandenen ePubs alle in ziemlich desolatem Zustand :) Ich mache mir daher auch immer die Mühe, die ePubs zu pimpen, bevor ich die auf den Reader kopiere und dann lese. Von daher interessiert es mich natürlich, ob du die Umschlagsvorlagen zur Verfügung stellen könntest. Wemnn kich das richtig gelesen habe, dann entstammen zumindest die Bildvorlagen ja einer PD Quelle. Dann könnte ich meine elektronischen Werke auch ein wenig pimpen.
Wie du siehst, gelingt es dir immer wieder, mir interessante Bücher vorzuschlagen, aber bisher ist es dir nur einmal gelungen, mich zu einem realen Buch zu bewegen :)

hast du von Balzac ePub Bücher? Es gibt ja mehrere Sammlungen und ich habe mich immer gefragt, wie die Qualität bei diesen so ist.
Wie kannst du die ePubs aufbereiten? Was nutzt du da denn für eine Software und in was für einem Format und welchen Abmessungen brauchst du da denn die Dateien? Die Vorlagen kann ich Dir gerne zur Verfügung stellen.
Na mal sehen, ich werde es schon noch einmal schaffen, dich wieder an das gute alte analoge Buch zu locken ;)

Hi Tobi,
ich nehme Sigil https://github.com/Sigil-Ebook/Sigil/releases zum bearbeiten der Ebooks. Auf der einen Seite ist es schade, dass die Bücher so schlecht gestylt daherkommen, andererseits is es natürlich auch nicht jedermanns Sache sich auch noch daran zu setzen. Immerhin gibt es sie ja. Der Aufwand kann allerdings recht schwanken, ich bin da recht penibel. Auch ein eBook muss bei mir etwas hermachen und muss on der viruellem Bibliothek gut aussehen, das haben wir zumindest beide gemeinsam.
Das Format der Dateien ist mir eigentlich egal, am allerliebsten gleich als Bildformat wie JPG oder PNG.

Mit Klebestreifen, Tesa etc. wäre ich sehr vorsichtig. Dass der Hersteller schreibt, sie wären auch für Buchreparaturen, heisst nicht, dass das Material säurefrei und jahrzehntelang stabil ist. Unbesehen kaufen kann man Planatol, Klebestreifen von Neschen/Monochrome oder der EKZ. Planatol, weil normale Kleber nicht elastisch auftrocknen, aber Buchbinderleim.
Für Schutzumschläge gibt es eine Reihe von Lösungen: Natronkraftpapier oder Geschenkpapier mit historischen Illustrationen zuschneiden, kräftiges Zeichenpapier in Elfenbein oder Buchleinen mit Planatol auf Papier kleben. Selbst Baumwollstoff auf Papier ist geeignet, wenn das Dekor passt.
Mit Buchleinenstreifen lässt sich ein beschädigter Falz selbst reparieren, wenn man eine Möglichkeit zum Pressen hat. Einfache Buchbindepressen sind nicht teuer. Für den Anfang reichen zwei Holzbrettchen, zwei kleine Schraubzwingen und zwei zusätzliche Hände beim Festschrauben. Oder zwei Vierkantstäbe, die mit Flügelschrauben verbunden sind.
Hui, macht echt was her nach der Reparatur. Daumen hoch!

Oh wow, das Ergebnis kann sich wirklich sehen lassen! Ich habe hier noch einige Klassiker stehen, die in keinem guten Gesamtzustand sind, da muss ich mal schauen, ob es sich für die lohnen würde, auch neue Schutzumschläge und Lesebändchen zu machen. Ich vermute aber, dass es sich bei vielen nicht lohnen würde, weil einfach auch der Buchblock zu sehr in Mitleidenschaft gezogen ist…
Aber es wäre eine Option, mir meine Lieblingsklassiker noch mal im Antiquariat gebraucht zu kaufen, mit dem Hintergedanken, dass ich auch solche in Erwägung ziehe, deren Schutzumschlag stark beschädigt ist – solange das Buch darunter noch in einem passablen Zustand ist.
